But it is only as strong as the seven before it. The Due Diligence Statement you file in EU TRACES declares that everything upstream was done properly: origin captured, geolocation validated, risk assessed, failures mitigated. Every actor placing packaging or packaged goods on the EU market: packaging manufacturers, brand owners and fillers, importers and distributors, and e-commerce platforms. Obligations differ by role, but the Declaration of Conformity sits with whoever places the packaging on the market. Yes, in effect. If your packaged goods reach the EU market, the obligations follow the product. Non-EU manufacturers typically appoint an Authorised Representative in the EU, and that mandate is referenced in the Declaration of Conformity itself. No. The obligations are live. A missing or incomplete Declaration of Conformity now means blocked placement, enforcement exposure and brand risk, so the priority is getting every packaging family declared and signed rather than waiting for further guidance. Extended Producer Responsibility reporting is about fees and tonnages declared to a national scheme. The Declaration of Conformity is a legal statement, signed by a named person, that a given packaging specification meets the PPWR requirements. Both need packaging data, but only the DoC needs the supporting technical documentation behind it. No. SKUs sharing the same packaging structure and materials can be grouped into a packaging family and covered by a single multi-specification declaration. That grouping is what keeps a 5,000-SKU portfolio manageable, and it is handled at bill-of-materials level in the platform. Yes. The parties who handled it. Legality. Material composition. Chain of custody. Keeping up with supply-chain and sustainability regulations can feel like learning a new acronym every quarter, and it is no longer only an EU story: in the past few weeks alone we have logged a mandatory rubber-traceability law in Malaysia and a deforestation-free cattle law in Colombia. We monitor more than 40 such instruments across the EU, UK, the Americas, Africa and Asia, and the list continues to grow as we speak. Most commentary treats each instrument as a new discipline requiring a new project. The output is mandatory traceability submitted to a government portal, for example Vietnam’s VeriGoods system under Circular 31/2026/TT-BCT, mandatory from 1 January 2027. Same core, different spokes. #### The economics are front-loaded, then flat Tackled alone, each regulation adds a full workstream, so total effort keeps climbing with every acronym. Build the foundation and the first regulation or two cost more up front, but everything after draws from what you already have. The siloed line keeps rising; the foundation line flattens. Front-loaded, yes; cheaper over the long run, clearly. #### The compliance document is a snapshot; the data is the asset A compliance document answers one rule at one moment. When the rule changes, or the next one lands, you begin again. The traceability data beneath it is durable. It is what you reuse for the PPWR material-composition labelling arriving 12 August 2028, the recycled-content requirements from 1 January 2030, and whatever a producing country introduces next year. And the foundation is not only a compliance asset. The same verified origin and chain-of-custody data underpins sourcing decisions, supply risk, and the product claims a business wants to make with confidence. Compliance is simply the forcing function; the regulations were the reason you finally built something you would have wanted anyway. #### What to do now Map the shared data, not the tools. List the regulations that touch you against the data elements they have in common. Most of the list will resolve to the same five questions. Ask the better question. Not “which tool do we buy for this rule?” but “is our traceability foundation good enough that this rule is just another output?” Consolidate supplier evidence in one place. The same suppliers and the same materials will be asked again by the next regime, and the cheapest questionnaire is the one you never have to send twice. EUDR is in force from December 2026 for large operators, carbon-disclosure frameworks are tightening, and the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) is phasing in. Each regulation demands different outputs from heavily overlapping data. Demand: A platform whose underlying data model serves multiple regulations from a single data entry. Capture material origin, supplier evidence, and chain-of-custody once, then produce DoCs for PPWR, Due Diligence Statements for EUDR, and emission disclosures for whichever framework comes next. Operators and large traders will need to demonstrate origin, including geo coordinates in an auditable manner, to prove the product/commodity is deforestation free. This information will then need to be included in a Due Diligence Statement (DDS) that is submitted to Traces, an EU Due Diligence tool. Companies will need to be compliant with the EUDR by December 2025. So how do I ensure compliancy ahead of the December 2025 deadline? Step 1: Evaluate Your Current Supply Chain Practices In order to know what action needs to be taken to prove compliance, it's important to understand what your current supply chain looks like, from start to end. Who are the players, what are the current practices... By having this information at hand, the journey to compliance becomes easier to approach. An important first step to compliance starts with understanding what is happening at source: what are the practices on ground and are there potential risks of deforestation linked to the product /commodity you aim to import into the EU. Moreover, when a transaction takes place, for example between a producer and cooperative, is this information documented in a trusted way or are we missing a system that enables this? These are all aspects that consider, not only from the perspective of the EUDR, but from the perspective of future regulations to follow, such as the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), which aims to promote sustainability, protect human rights, and improve corporate accountability. Another factor to think about is whether the product/commodity is traceable at batch/ lot level, whereby each individual batch is assigned a unique identifier and thus, can be linked to the exact geolocation of where it was produced. OR whether all plots of land used to produce the raw goods are grouped together. This second scenario means the operator will be declaring in excess, whereby, several plots are combined together vs declaring one geolocation per commodity/ product produced. We recently published an article on the risks associated with declaring in excess but in short, this means the operator takes full responsibility for the compliance of all the plots of land with provided geolocation and so, even if only some of the plots are used for production, the operator is still accountable for the compliance of every declared plot. And if any one of these plots is found non-compliant, this will mean ALL plots are non-compliant. July 26, 2024, Singapore — Agridence developed a digital platform specifically for the Global Platform for Sustainable Natural Rubber (GPSNR) Reporting Requirements (RR) with the aim of simplifying the process of sustainability data reporting, collection and aggregation for the natural rubber value chain. When the exercise was first introduced to GPSNR members in 2022, a major tire maker reached out to Agridence to develop a solution to improve the reporting process and make data consolidation and aggregation easier. In 2023, two more major tire manufacturers started to use the tool. In previous years, some GPSNR members expressed concerns about the redundant efforts required to generate reports for multiple downstream customers, who requested the reports in different formats. As a solution, Agridence was appointed by GPSNR as a service provider and developed an online form for users to log in, work on the form, and submit it with a click of a button. Data will then be consolidated in a consistent format to reduce efforts in re-formatting data into a single file for data aggregation. “Agridence has developed an intuitive digital form that consolidates the reporting process onto one efficient platform. We hope this will help in ensuring a smooth data collection process without duplication and multiple formats.
