Continental: a scalable carbon calculator for smallholder rubber.

A trial within the Kapuas Hulu Project to design a practical carbon footprint methodology for natural rubber smallholders: accurate enough to trust, simple enough to run for thousands of farmers.

Natural rubber Kapuas Hulu, West Kalimantan Continental Pilot: 50-150 farmers
    The insight

Three factors dominate a smallholder’s footprint.

Existing carbon calculators are sophisticated but too complex to run at scale in smallholder supply chains. A joint study with NTU found that three components dominate emissions, and that a simplified model built on them produces almost identical results.

    forest
    Land Use Change
The largest contributor, and the hardest to assess at scale.
    science
    Chemical use
Fertilisers and inputs applied on the plantation.
    bolt
    Electricity
    Consumption across processing and operations.
    The critical consideration

It has to scale beyond the pilot.

Any solution must work for hundreds or thousands of farmers, not only the Kapuas Hulu group. The trial specifically tests:

    01
How the workflow can be simplified for wide adoption
    02
Which data can realistically be collected at scale
    03
How digital tools can automate or streamline the process
    04
How to run large-scale LUC assessments without prohibitive costs
    What the trial builds

    Six workstreams, one methodology.

    crop_free
    Pilot scope
50-150 farmers selected to represent a scalable setup, not a hand-picked showcase.
    smartphone
    Scalable data collection
Simple tools for farmers and field agents: integration into the Agridence app, digital forms and QR-based workflows.
    barcode_scanner
    Chemical database
A database of chemicals used in the region, with barcode scanning for fast, reliable input capture.
    local_shipping
    Transport emissions, automated
Farm and factory geolocations already on the platform calculate transport emissions automatically.
    calculate
    Methodology selection
The full industry method versus the simplified NTU model: near-identical results, assessed from a scalability perspective.
    satellite_alt
    LUC assessment partner
Land Use Change is the biggest factor and the biggest bottleneck: a geospatial partner and defined data flows bring it to scale.
    Expected outcome

A pilot with a clear scaling pathway.

checkA realistic, scalable carbon calculation methodology, tested in the field
checkPractical workflows for farmer-level data collection
checkLUC calculation integrated through a specialist partner
checkA scaling pathway beyond the Kapuas Hulu pilot, to thousands of farmers
